It is June 2018 and Hip Hop is the most listened to genre of music. It Has been like that for years, but we have proof to back it up now. In one month, heavy hitting artists release their highly anticipated albums. The artists of June were Kanye West, Kids See Ghost (Kanye West and Kid Cudi), Jay Rock, Nas, The Carters (Beyonce and Jay-Z), Death Grips, Teyana Taylor and Drake. Remember, this is just June; this is not include the month before or after. This also does not including other artist of different genres.
To many, this does not seem like an issue and it isn’t.
Music is an art form and should be absorbed as such, but with so much music and time being so short is it appreciated? We live in a time period where everything comes at us fast. Food is made in less than 10 mins; ordering products online gets to your door in less than a day, we can get to know a friend socially in less than an hour by studying their bio. However, we can not do the same with art.
Let’s get to the heart of this article: music partly is being diluted because we have so much of it. When was the last time you understood an album? Can you recall when you understood every angle of a punch line or an entendre? Honestly there’s nothing wrong with it, I’ve just taken notice of this moment in history. In the 90’s, which many consider to be one of the greatest eras of Hip Hop, only a handful of artists would release their music at a time. In 1995, 2Pac released Me Against The World (one of his most popular albums); Ol’ Dirty Bastard debuted his well known cover art, Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version, following the title of the Wu Tang Album. The ODB album was on March 28. If we jump to April, we see that Mobb Deep gave the masses their first album:The Infamous. The past is always a different time. What was the change?
The major cause of this overwhelming amount of music is the internet and advancing technology. Artists in modern times have many different ways of submitting music. Artists now can range from ametur to professional to Pop icon, with websites such as Soundcloud and Bandcamp. Many lovers of traditional music can see this as a depreciation of the art form, but without this advancement we wouldn’t have Lil Uzi Vert, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Meek Mill and many other the newer artists that we listen to now.
